Having just finished our first ever low and slow competition at The Creekside Hotel in Warricknabeal Victoria, I thought it was only fair to give a mention to all of the teams that competed. Granted, when the competition comes to a close there is the standard "thank you" to all the teams and a round of applause from the general public - but do they know or have any idea, in reality, of the massive amount effort each team exerts just to actually show up and compete? Probably not.
Low and Slow BBQ teams came from all over Australia to compete, some drove for 19 hours straight from Brisbane, some on returning home blew tyres and waited hours for roadside assistance and some had small fires on their trailers and had to call the fire brigade. Not to mention the monetary component alone - teams literally spend thousands of dollars to get to these competitions. You would assume that after the amount of effort the teams put in logistically the competition would be cut throat! Well you would be wrong. All of the teams were massively helpful and extremely friendly. For example - Southern Boys BBQ lent us an extension lead, The Meat Sweats lent us their thermometer when ours failed, Boulevard BBQ gave us 2 cedar smoking planks, Aussie Pitmasters served us coffee in the wee hours of the morning and The Pitbulls put up with our rowdy antics all through the night! With all of the teams cooking through the night and having very little sleep, the comradery continued irrelevant of point scores. Then when its all said and done, with very little sleep, we are all tasked yet again to pack up our massive amount of kit and begin the journeys home. If its one thing I learnt from our recent outing its that BBQ people are a special kind of crazy! Well done to all of the teams for their effort. The Ro 'n' Slow BBQ Team. |
